Te Whakaaetanga Trust

Gideon Paerata Rihari

Kia ora, I’m Gideon Paerata Rihari, the youngest son of Te Hurihanga Rihari and Sheree Rihari, and a proud descendant of Ngāti Torehina Ki Matakā.

Born in 1995 in Huntly, my whānau has lived in various towns and cities across Aotearoa. While I haven’t had the opportunity to live on our papakainga, Wharengaere, my father and whānau have always emphasised the importance of returning home, learning our whakapapa, and fulfilling my duty as an ahi kā and kaitiaki in service of our people and whenua.

Since birth, I’ve been privileged to witness and learn of the dedication of many leaders who have sacrificed greatly to pursue the dreams of our tūpuna: that our people may not only live, but thrive on their own whenua, with protection from persecution, opportunities for prosperity, and the freedom to practise tino rangatiratanga.

My decision to serve my whānau, hapū, and the Te Whakaaetanga campaign is not one I take lightly. While I may not be the oldest, wisest, or most experienced of our trustees, I will do my utmost to contribute what I can, so all our hapu rangatiratanga is recognised, whilst upholding the values and principles of our people.
